In a recent interview with iPulse, Jiří Balcar, a talented alumnus from the Czech Republic, unveiled the transformative impact of his time at Lynn University, while shedding light on the creative awakening that unfolded during his academic tenure.

An unusual chapter in his life marked the onset of college for Balcar, as the final term of his freshman year and the entirety of his sophomore year were overshadowed by the omnipresent challenges of COVID-19. Navigating through a landscape of online classes, Balcar strategically focused on essential courses outside his curriculum, during which he dedicated his efforts to crafting independent short films within the confines of the block schedule.

“Immersing myself in the theoretical and historical facets of film, guided by the insightful teachings of Professor Nava Dushi, marked a pivotal juncture in my cinematic journey,” said Balcar, a Lynn alumna.

Lynn’s curriculum introduced him to historical and international films, unexplored territories that proved instrumental in expanding his creative vistas. The exposure to diverse cinematic narratives, a departure from his independent work, ignited a newfound wellspring of creativity and inspiration.

“I design my classes to initiate creativity,” said Dushi, an influential figure in Balcar’s jouney.

This commitment is evident through extended office hours and even the willingness of professors to dedicate their free time to student enrichment. Such devotion, as underscored by Professor Dushi, enabled students like Balcar to not only grasp the theoretical intricacies but also thrive creatively in their cinematic pursuits.

“The professors at Lynn go above and beyond, providing extra attention to students passionate about their craft,” said Balcar, reflecting on the unique support system fostered by Lynn’s faculty.

Balcar’s junior year at Lynn marked the initiation of his substantial involvement in filmmaking. Lynn University served as the backdrop for Balcar’s exploration into uncharted cinematic territories, facilitating the screening of two short films. This platform not only showcased his artistic prowess but also highlighted the collaborative and nurturing environment that Lynn provides for aspiring filmmakers.

Today, Balcar continues his pursuit of cinematic excellence, pursuing a master’s degree in film at the prestigious ArtCenter College in Los Angeles, a trajectory shaped by the transformative influence of his alma mater.
