The Shakespearean play “Much Ado About Nothing” debuted in cinemas on May 7, 1993. The adapted movie depicts enemies-to-lovers, character development and tradition. Recently, Lynn students spoke about how they felt about these critical themes.

The film stars Sir Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Robert Sean Leonard, Kate Beckinsale, Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves. Branagh plays the arrogant bachelor, Benedick, who originally despises romance. Ironically, he falls in love with Thompson’s character, the feisty Beatrice.

“I think the enemies-to-lovers theme is part of the culture of storytelling,” said Jezzy Yeb, a senior psychology major. “It’s balance.”

Throughout the film, Benedick and Beatrice go through different stages of character development. At first, both characters hated marriage because they thought it limited their freedom. Although they begin as opposites, they eventually find common ground.

“The enemies-to-lovers theme depends on the person’s character and if they are willing to put their pride aside in certain situations and learn to coexist in the other person’s dimension,” said Amaya Vega, a sophomore majoring in Health Care Management.

The movie also focuses on the relationship between Claudio and Hero, played by Robert Sean Leonard and Kate Beckinsale. Claudio, also a bachelor, falls in love and wants to marry Hero. However, he mistakenly believes that Hero is having an affair.

“When I think of breaking tradition, I think about breaking promises,” said Nate Schulze, a sophomore studying communications. “If you break a tradition, a person feels sad or it may make them reconsider the relationship.”

“Much Ado About Nothing” is available for rent on DVD in the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Library. It is also on Tubi, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
