With Thanksgiving less than a month away, Lynn University students are preparing their plans and traditions as the holiday draws near.

Lynn is known for its diverse community, serving as a home to students from over 100 countries and nearly all 50 states. With the arrival of fall, many of these students are eager to return home and spend time with family eating delicious traditional foods.

“Typically, my parents and I travel to New York to spend the holiday with the rest of our family,” said Paige Platt, a Lynn junior. “I am looking forward to eating my favorite food, which is sweet potatoes with marshmallows.”

Spending Thanksgiving with family allows people to reminisce on memories that they are thankful for.

“When I was six years old, my parents took me to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; it was definitely a momentous day for me,” said Platt.

Some students are fortunate enough to enjoy the holiday with family at home, while others celebrate with friends. Friendsgiving has become a popular way of celebrating among students, giving those who are unable to visit family a chance to enjoy the holiday.

“Every year, I look forward to baking my favorite apple cider cake with my mom. It seems very generic, but it holds a very special place in my heart,” said Mackenzie Driver-Benjamin, a Lynn sophomore.

For those who do not have plans to celebrate with family and friends, the university hosts events and provides staple holiday fare to make students feel at home and as comfortable as possible.

“I travel every year for Thanksgiving, but prior to leaving for the holiday, Tri Sigma hosts a ‘Sigmagiving’ every year, which I have always looked forward to,” said Driver-Benjamin.

Thanksgiving is a time of celebration, gratitude, student unity and heartwarming family reunions. Regardless of plans, this time of year allows students to grasp the meaning of gratitude.
