Tips and Takeaways for Counseling

Sandra Whitmer, a Lynn Counselor Gives Advice

By Lily Waters, Staff Writer

Sandra Whitmer, an assistant director of Lynn’s Counseling Services, works at the new Snyder Center for Health and Wellness which opened in Oct. 2023. She creates a safe environment for students to talk confidentially.

Whitmer discussed many tips on how students, especially freshmen, can overcome academic stress.

“Adding academic expectations to mix can increase one’s stress level,” said Whitmer. “To use time management to a student’s advantage, focus on the things you can control and take advantage of support services at Lynn.”

While it is a school run organization, the counseling center is held to the same standards as any other therapist.

It is separate from all other records on campus, and no one has access to information outside of the Counseling Center unless a student chooses to share it with them,” said Whitmer. “In counseling, students can learn how to manage their situations and emotions.

Many group therapy sessions can advise students to have someone to talk about something they are going through. There are individual sessions as well.

“Currently, we have a group that focuses on social skills, making social connections and a group that focuses on anxiety,” said Whitmer.

The counseling services at Lynn University are for any student who wants to talk to someone confidentially. It is free of charge and counseling services are open Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Counseling Center is also available on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students who wish to make appointment can easily do so at the Student Health Portal.
