Visiting the Ocala National Forest for the first time, travelers will be captivated by the immense beauty of woods, which offers a refreshing change from the tropical beaches of Boca Raton.

During the inevitable stress of a student’s life, it is essential to take time to relax and visit nature. The benefits of doing so are numerous, one of which is Attention Restoration Theory (ART).

According ot the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, “ART proposes that exposure to natural environemnts encoursages more effortless brain function, thereby allowing it to recover and replenish its directed attention capacity.”

That is something Lynn University students can embrace at Ocala National Forest, located a little over three hours from campus. The second largest national forest in Florida at 383,689 acres, Ocala National Forest provides the perfect getaway for students of all budgets, with lodging options ranging from budget-friendly tent camping to luxury cabins.

“I grew up not too far from there,” said Jack Moran, a senior. “There is so much to [do], it would almost take an entire summer to get through everything.”

The forest offers several campsites for all to enjoy. The campgrounds are very welcoming and great for first-time campers. A leading recommendation is the Lake Waldena Resort, which offers resservations for around $30 per night, including electrical connections, grills, a lake and a indoor bathrooms and shower facilities.

According to U.S. News & World Report, “[t]ravelers applaud the cleanliness and scenic beauty of Ocala National Forest’s camping amenities, which offer easy access to activities like swimming, paddling, wildlife photography and mountain biking.”

As the sun sets over Central Florida, an incredible view that is not often seen from South Florida exoses its beauty. Due to the low light pollution in the area, the night sky shows hundreds of stars. Sitting at the campfire with friends, students are able to unwind and enjoy each other’s company, especially with the lack of good cell service in the area.

The National Forest Service’s website states that “[s]leeping under the stars next to a sparkling lake or in a shady forest is a great way to reconnect with the outdoors. A relaxed evening in a tent or trailer prepares you for the coming work week.”

Students without vehicles can use the newly opened Brightline train from Boca Raton to Orlando Airport. From there, travelers can take airport shuttles or an Uber to Ocala.

The Ocala National Forest is a must-see Florida destination. A relatively short distance from Lynn, it provides the perfect refuge for relaxation, recharging and an opportunity to be one with nature.
