On March 10, 2024, the 96th Academy Awards will be held, and awards will be given out to the most outstanding films and people from 2023.

The nominees for all the categories were announced Jan. 23, and some notable names are looking to take home awards. Some standouts include Paul Giamatti, who earned a nomination for Best Actor for his performance in “The Holdovers.”  Lily Gladstone has also been recognized for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” making her the first-ever Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress.

“I think ‘Oppenheimer’ will clean up,” said Benjamin Orifici, an assistant professor of film studies at Lynn University. “It’s nominated for best picture, Best Actor with Cillian Murphy, and Best Director with Christopher Nolan. It’s clearly the favorite and it’s done well at other award shows.”

As with every award season, this one has had some notable snubs. Particularly, movie lovers seem to be in a frenzy over the lack of nominations for Greta Gerwig’s hit, “Barbie.” Some seem to think that it was the biggest snub of the season, while others believe that the right movies were nominated.

“I feel like the movie was not Oscar-worthy,” said Valentina Morello, a senior and film production major at Lynn. “It’s iconic, don’t get me wrong and it’s also not a bad movie. But I feel that it doesn’t really reach the standards that you would expect for a movie that is nominated for an Oscar.”

Overall, this Oscar season is shaping up to be an entertaining one. As for Orifici and Morello, they both have a common movie they believe could upstage “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie.”

‘”The Holdovers’ has been doing great in this year’s awards season,” suggested Morello.

“I’m always rooting for Paul Giamatti,” mused Orifici. “I thought he was absolutely brilliant in ‘The Holdovers.’”
