Going Crazy

Game’s Newest Update Promised to Reflect Fans’ Requests, Went Overboard With Difficulty

In November 2022, Sonic’s latest main-line title, “Sonic Frontiers,” was made public, and a few weeks later, Sega announce three updates scheduled to be released in the future. The biggest update, titled “The Final Horizon,” was to be the final one, and it was to be released on Sept. 28, 2023.

This update was important as it would have long-requested features such as multiple playable characters, newly added difficulty and a revamped ending, all free of charge. Fans were incredibly excited for the new downloadable content (DLC) but were not expecting the difficulty to spike to such a substantial degree.

“The update is really fun, but it did get very frustrating because of how punishing it is,” said Jake Reich, a Lynn University sophomore.

Two of the most compelling selling points of the new content were the new trials and the final boss that players would have to face. Players were mixed on the update because it was not as polished as some were expecting.

“It’s better than the base game, but as a boss fight, it’s finicky and the towers were janky,” said Sanai Gordon, a Lynn sophomore.

The severe increase in difficulty is one of the main gripes that fans have with the third and supposedly final update 3, specifically in the challenging trials.

“It’s fun if you ignore the trials because they’re hard for no reason,” said Holly Muchado, a Lynn freshman.

The game’s newest update is now out on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One.
