Savoring Spain: A Study Abroad Experience

A Lynn Student’s Journey to Spain

By Jazmin Springer, Staff Writer

Last summer, sophomore Brenda Tomayconza had the opportunity to study abroad in Seville, Spain, through one of Lynn University’s study abroad programs.

During her time in Europe, Tomayconza, was able to experience unique facets of Spain’s culture. She described her experience during an interview with iPulse.

When first immersing into the Spanish lifestyle, Tomayconza faced numerous culture shocks. Some of these included how common it was for people to smoke and discovering that it is uncommon to tip when dining out.

Tomayconza, a native Peruvian-Spanish speaker, felt some of the advantages of understating the language but still experienced some difficulties.

“It was a bit hard to understand when they spoke Spanish because they spoke very fast, and the dialect is different than Latin American Spanish,” said Tomayconza, a sophomore.

However, these differences only made her time in Spain more exciting, as she was able to learn about the country’s rich and unique culture. Tomayconza learned about “siesta,” a traditional Spanish nap taken in the middle of the day. During these naps, the streets would empty, and Tomayconza could explore Seville’s beautiful architecture and history while also getting to know herself.

“Studying abroad is not just learning about a different country,” said Tomayconza. “You also get to know yourself and appreciate the beauty of being alone.”

Tomayconza, an international business major, is confident that studying abroad has allowed her to grow as a person. She believes every student should study abroad at least once in their academic career.

“If you want to get out of your comfort zone, you should do it. Studying abroad gives you a sense of independence,” she said.

Since studying abroad in Spain, Tomayconza often reminisces on her experiences and hopes to return one day. She is grateful for the opportunity and plans to study abroad again next summer in Thailand.
