The Fifth Annual Holocaust Awareness Event Returns to Lynn

By Spencer A. Backman, Global News Editor

A panel of top tier speakers are coming to the Wold Preforming Arts Center at Lynn University on April 4, 2024, hosted by The Center for Citizenship and Civility.

For the past 5 years, Lynn’s Center for Citizenship and Civility has hosted a Holocaust Remembrance Event featuring expert speakers and a theme related to hate, genocide and different aspects of the Holocaust. This year, the event is focused on the rise of hate and hate speech in the past few years, in the United States and globally. The guest speakers from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will talk
about how hate has been presented in recent years and what actions can be taken to quell it.

“Major organizations like the ADL, SPLC, and the FBI have been tracking incidents of racially motivated hate for many years. The numbers had been declining each year until around 2016, when they spiked, and they remain at record levels today,” said distinguished professor of American History Dr. Robert P. Watson.

“An unparalleled opportunity for our students to engage in a dialogue about important issues facing them.”

The core focus of the event, which brings over 700 attendees to Lynn each year, is remembering the Holocaust while raising awareness of the same danger that led to the Holocaust decades ago.

“Bringing leaders from such reputable organizations to our campus provides an unparalleled opportunity for our students to engage in a dialogue about important issues facing them,” said Dr. Sindee Kerker, the co-host of the event.

“Lynn is known for being an inclusive and international campus, one that promotes civility and citizenship. As such, we are ideally positioned to host national leaders for a conversation about the increase in hate toward the Jewish, black, Latino, Asian, Muslim, gay and immigrant communities,” said Watson.

Tickets for the event sold out on March 10, but a very limited number of extras may become available. For more information, call the Lynn Box Office at 561-237-9000.
