Balancing Academics and Professional Life

By Jonah Cole, Staff Writer

Even though receiving an education is of the utmost importance to many people, students can struggle to maintain a work-life balance.

Managing a college-level class workload can be a difficult task. Between classes, completing homework and maintaining a social life, it can seem like students are running around all day. That challenge only becomes more difficult when they have a job as well.

“I would say that some aspects of my life that have become more difficult would definitely be keeping up with classes and homework,” said Sam Russo, a Lynn University junior and part-time health insurance data entry specialist. “My job requires long hours, and that can put a real strain on my schedule.”

Academics are not the only part of a college student’s life that can be hampered by having a job. Simple things like having free time to watch favorite shows and movies or talking to friends can all be drastically affected.

However, Russo believes that he has seen tangible benefits from having to manage work and school life.

“You become way more conscious of what you spend money on and how much you spend,” insisted Russo. “I’ve also definitely gotten better at time management and making sure I make time for myself to decompress.”

Niko Biamonte, a Lynn sophomore and peer leader, feels that if a student is looking for a job in college, they need to make sure that they are up to the task.

“It’s definitely been more difficult to talk to people from back home,” said Biamonte. “I don’t have that much free time, my brother and sister have commitments and my parents work. So, I definitely haven’t been able to talk to them as much as I would like.”

“Do something that you like and enjoy, but manage your time efficiently,” warned Biamonte. “Don’t use your job as an excuse to slack off school; get your work done and budget your day out.”

Having a job as a college student can be overwhelming. However, when setting one’s nose to the grindstone and approaching the challenge with the right mentality, hard efforts and short-term sacrifices are always rewarded in major ways.
