A South Korean Student’s Path to Success

Embracing the American Experience

Born and raised in South Korea, transfer student Jaewon Baek knew she wanted to learn more about different cultures and further her studies by attending an American university. As a kid, Baek commonly watched American shows and YouTube vloggers, which fueled her dream of experiencing American culture first-hand. When given the opportunity to study in the United States, she took it right away.

“Growing up in Korea, I had a lot of friends who studied abroad, and I wanted to do the same thing,” said Baek, a junior.

Majoring in music performance, Baek specializes in cello, an instrument she is passionate about playing. She believes pursuing her education in America will give her opportunities she would not have had while studying in South Korea.

“In Korea, they are really focused on numbers and academic achievement,” said Baek. “In America, they are more student-focused.”

One thing Baek shares with students who study abroad is missing home. She believes it is very important to stay connected to her Korean roots. “Sometimes, when I’m homesick, I go to Chinese-Korean restaurants and H Mart, and I feel at home,” said Baek.

Baek knows she made the right choice to study in America and is excited to continue her education at Lynn University. She believes being in America, and specifically at Lynn, has broadened her cultural awareness.
