Safety Precautions as COVID-19 Continues to Spread

Lynn Students Respond to Virus Hysteria

Since the first case was reported on Dec. 2019 in Wuhan, China, the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread globally, having now (at the time of this publication) affected at least 356,100 people in at least 163 different countries.

COVID-19 is a contagious respiratory illness that is spread from close contact with an infected person or through respiratory droplets from the coughs or sneezes of an infected person.

There is currently no vaccine or treatment for the disease, and it is therefore recommended people take precautionary measures to ensure that they do not get infected.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic, causing panic among the masses. WHO has been consistently updating the public on the disease and offering its advice on how individuals can protect themselves from contracting it.

iPulse spoke with current Lynn students to get their take on COVID-19:

“I am making sure to wash my hands and do everything to keep myself safe and healthy,” said Erik Polin, freshman.

“With the coronavirus going around I am taking precautions, like staying home and constantly washing my hands,” said Christiana Tavoularis, freshman.

“The precautions I’m taking the most for coronavirus mainly are washing my hands often and disinfecting everything around me with Clorox wipes,” said Sophie Meza, senior. “[I’m] taking [a] lot of vitamin C and immune system boosters to make sure I don’t feel weak during the day. Aside from that, [I’m] just trying to stay calm overall and enjoy each day.”

“I’ve been washing my hands a lot more because I know that hand sanitizer does nothing to the virus, and [I’m] really just making sure that I avoid touching my face with my hands,” said Jonhansen Morales, junior.

“I’m avoiding going to public places and staying in my house most of the day,” said Ceci Marquez, freshman.

“I have been using hand sanitizer right after touching any door or person,” said Samantha Gallo, freshman.
