Salomey Owusu, senior, and Angelina Bayer, junior, traveled to Florence together to study for the spring semester, making their friendship stronger than ever before.

The prospect of studying abroad in a foreign country can be an exciting, but daunting prospect. Many students aspire to study abroad, but do not follow through due to the fear of the unknown. There is certainly a lot to think about, from culture shock to currency exchange and language barriers.

However, the pros most definitely outweigh any cons when it comes to spending time in another country.

“Going abroad gave me the opportunity to be immersed in another culture and experience a different way of life,” said Owusu.

Owusu and Bayer, who were roommates prior to travelling to Italy overcame such worries by going together. Traveling with a friend is a wonderful way to make far scary than doing so alone.

The pair had the most amazing experiences while abroad. They not only traveled all over Italy, where they were based in Florence’s beautiful historic area, but many other European countries too. During their four month stay they managed to check Ireland, England, Germany, Spain and more off their travel bucket lists.

“My favorite moment would have to be visiting Pompeii and finally realizing that I’m in a place I’ve wanted to visit for years,” said Owusu.

Traveling is such an amazing educational experience that truly is unrivaled to any other available to students. Students at Lynn are also lucky to have access to such a great study abroad office. Spending a few months in a county that is not one’s own increases independence, cultural knowledge and  overall world view.

Students who study abroad may even come back with new interests and skills.

“I’ve learned a new language that I want to pursue more,” said Owusu.

For those perhaps preparing to study abroad in the near future, Owusu has some words of wisdom.

“A piece of advice I would give anyone thinking about studying abroad is to travel as much as possible while there and really get involved with the culture,” said Owusu.

College is the prime time to travel, as following graduation it becomes more difficult due to work commitments. Therefore, every student should make it their goal to study abroad and expand their horizons before they complete their studies.
