VAN CASTEREN EXCELS AFTER LYNN

A graduate of the 2014 class with a degree in multimedia journalism, Anne Marie Van Casteren has prospered in the local communications market after a diverse range of experiences at Lynn.

Van Casteren continuously found ways to stay involved during her time as an undergraduate. As a Fighting Knight, she played three years on the softball team and served as one of two representatives for the university’s student athlete panel. Van Casteren also played a significant role in iPulse, the student newspaper, during her collegiate years.

Starting as a staff writer in her freshman year, Van Casteren made the journey to managing editor during her senior year. She has worked to apply the lessons she learned in the newsroom to the various positions she has held since including her most recent role as public relations specialist for the City of Boca Raton.

“Within my position, I not only inform the public on all the exciting events, projects and initiatives taking place in Boca Raton, but I also assist in educating our community on city business, news and information,” said Van Casteren.

As the public relations specialist for the City of Boca, Van Casteren has put much of her Lynn experience to use. Her leadership experience outside of iPulse as a resident assistant, community adviser and student ambassador came together to prepare her to succeed in her current position.

“I engage with the media to share all the great stories coming out of the city through all of our departments,” said Van Casteren. “From Municipal and Utility Services to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, I play a role in handling the various degrees of communication involved there.”

The former editor credits Lynn and its faculty for the opportunities that have shaped her into a communication professional.  She feels they pushed her to never give up and to always deliver above expectations in every aspect of her life.

“I learned that it is really all about who you know, not what you do,” said Van Casteren.  “That has been so crucial to my development as a young professional and has pushed me to really step out of my comfort zone.  Building relationships is what got me to where I am today.”

Now with the City of Boca, Van Casteren has the pleasure of giving back to the community that has provided her with professional opportunities.  To keep up with her work, please visit www.myboca.us.
