JACOB SAND: INTERNATIONAL JOURNEYMAN

Jacob Sand,  a junior majoring in International Business Management, has traveled across the world and gained new experiences by coming to Lynn.

Sand was born in Hadsund, Denmark, in the eastern section of Jutland. Throughout most of his childhood, he lived in both Denmark and Shanghai, China. Having grown up with his parents and older sister Julie, the journey to Lynn allowed him to further many of the international relationships he established.

“I have really enjoyed my time here at Lynn,” said Sand. “I have made lasting relationships and gained so much from living in America thus far.”

Sand’s high school guidance counselor referred him to Lynn. After visiting the university, Sand fell in love with the location and atmosphere of the South Florida area.

“I have traveled all over the world, visiting places like Japan, China, Indonesia and Vietnam,” said Sand. “The list goes on forever, so I most definitely was not afraid to take on college in [the U.S.].”

Prior to coming to Lynn, Sand had studied and experienced multiple cultures in more than 30 countries.  As such, the differences among the various areas he has come in contact with have been profound.

“There are many cultural similarities and contrasts I find when comparing Denmark to the United States,” said Sand. “I even notice the little things, like how people greet each other or the way people communicate.”

Of the many observations he has made since coming to the Boca area, Sand acknowledges key differences in the health care, education systems and markedly higher crime rates across Palm Beach County.  Not to diminish his new home in the U.S., he has found a new appreciation for how Denmark’s society has a great trust in its government.

“I am happy I made the decision to come to Lynn,” said Sand. “Coming from Denmark, I bring my culture with me to America and continue to learn because of Lynn’s diverse community.  With dialogue being a focal point here, I find myself continuing to learn of areas I both have and have not visited.”

Thus far, Sand has had the chance to use his experiences from traveling around the world to make new relationships, network and find something new to love about each country to which he journeys. As he moves forward as a Fighting Knight, he plans to embrace and contribute to the growth of the diverse environment at Lynn.
