The Women’s Center’s production of “The Vagina Monologues” will be coming back again on Thursday, April 7 in the De Hoernle International Center at 7 p.m.

“The Vagina Monologues” is a play originally written in 1996 by Eve Ensler based on interviews she conducted with more than 200 women. The collection of interviews is tastefully transformed into a set of monologues that celebrate the resilience of women and the uniqueness of their sexuality.

The event was put together to raise awareness of violence experienced by women and girls. It also brings light to the positive and negative experiences some women have with love, independence, the female anatomy, and sexuality.

This is the fourth annual showing that has been put on and it has grown each year. Students are thrown off by the name but after a little explanation they are more willing to come see the performances.

“The name did catch me off guard but my friends told me it’s a great show,” said Christion Lewis, freshman. “I think it’s great for women to know and love their true selves. After watching my friends rehearse so many times, I know that this show is going to promote that same concept.”

This year’s cast of is comprised of 27 female staff, students and teachers. Some of the cast members have participated in the previous years while others are excited about their first time performing.

“I’m excited to be a part of it and help give a voice to women and their stories,” said Becca Bender, first time cast member. “I think the cool part about it is we are speaking on behalf of other women, not really being a character. We are giving a voice to women that allows them to share their stories.”

The show is open to students, faculty, staff, family, and friends. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for anyone with a valid Lynn ID. The money raised will also help the outside community.

“All of our proceeds go to Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse which is our local domestic violence shelter,” said Charlotte Muriel, Women’s Center Coordinator.
