Chapter Two

“Everyone, listen up, we are about to proceed,” said Michael Dunn, president of the Neighborhood Watch. “As we all know, last months assignment has been completed and therefore you are all still safe.”

Everyone then proceeds to stand up and start applauding. The Vice President Adam Black then stands up, “Okay everyone, you know the drill. There are 51 blank slips in this bowl and there are two slips with names on it. You will each draw one and then everyone must show Michael and I their slip so we can account for who has the targets. Remember, you are to tell no one of this. If you get caught or if you cannot complete the execution by our next meeting, you will be terminated. Good luck to you all, and remember, we are always watching.”

The crowd chants back saying “we are always watching,” then stands up and proceeds to file into a line to draw the names out of the bowl.

Each member pulls a piece of paper, making either a face of anger or relief. Some people want to get targets, while others do not. Some are proud to be members, while others are simply in the Neighborhood Watch because one of their family members was once a member and they were chosen to join. You cannot refuse the Neighborhood Watch. Aaron Wilson, one of the youngest members of the Neighborhood Watch, pulled out the slip and it read “MARY THIEL” in bold black letters. The other member of the Neighborhood Watch who pulled a name was Mark Simmons. He pulled the name “ROGER WILLIAMS,” which was his younger brother’s best friend.

Mark was in shock; he did not know if he could go through with it. Roger was like a little brother to him.

“Excuse me, Mr. President,” said Mark. “I was wondering if there was any way that I can get a different name?”

The President looked at him fiercely.

“Mark, you know the rules, once you have chosen, you cannot go back,” said Michael.

Mark paced back and forth, contemplating what to do.

“Mr. President, I will do anything,” begged Mark.

The President looked at him with great disappointment.

“This is the last time I am going to say it, you know the rules. You must eliminate your target by next meeting or you will be terminated. So what is it going to be? The choice is yours,” said Michael.

He then walked out of the room and Mark just stood there in disbelief.

“Oh god, what am I going to do?” said Mark.
