Swimming for Sport
How Students Utilize Swimming as Their Main Fitness Tool
By Delaney Gould, Staff Writer
While using Lynn’s pool facilities, students enjoy workouts of all sorts to help stay fit and active. Dry-land workouts are not for everyone. Lynn’s McCusker Pool Complex allows students and Lynn community members to experiment with swim workouts instead of the typical weightlifting or running options.
The McCusker Pool Complex gives its visitors two options: a pool for casual swimming and lounging and a regulation pool for swim competitions. Generally, the competitive pool is used by Lynn’s Swim team, whose members are consistently sharpening their skills in the water.
“I love working on technique-specific strokes, especially improving on my stroke, butterfly,” said Cecilia Diaz, a senior.
One of the most common types of pool workouts is a stretching exercise called water aerobics. Not only does Lynn’s swim team engage in this type of workout, but so do other teams and regular students. The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and the men’s and
women’s soccer teams can all be found in the pool on occasion, getting a good stretch.
“Stretching in the water is so different from stretching on land,” said Ethan Yorio, a senior. “Moving in the water helps us feel the stretches in a completely different way and in entirely new places.” Other ways of getting a pool conditioning session are swimming laps, swimming for time and even diving. The McCusker Pool Complex gives students endless opportunities for workouts with its 75’ x 60’ short-course yard pool, nine racing lanes, 5’–7’ feet of depth and its recreational pool.
“My advice for someone just starting out in the world of swimming is to take it easy,” said Diaz. “Do simple strokes and drill work. It can be challenging at first, but it takes time and practice.”
For students looking to get in a different type of workout or simply enjoy the Florida sun, look no further than Lynn’s McCusker Pool Complex.
