The First Season of Many to Come: Lynn’s Freshman Athletes Experience the Joys of Collegiate Competition

Despite difficult circumstances, Lynn’s freshman athletes are thrilled to compete this spring after training hard and patiently waiting for their college sports career to begin.

Freshman year is an exciting time for college athletes since it is filled with many new experiences and new competitive opportunities that help freshman athletes improve. This year, Lynn’s freshman athletes are incredibly excited to compete this spring after the COVID-19 pandemic caused many of them to lose their final high school sports season and delayed the start of their collegiate sports career.

“It has been a long time coming with all this COVID-19 stuff, but I’m glad to finally compete,” said Jasim Abu-Dan, men’s swimming athlete. “It really does feel nice to compete after this past year of a whirlwind and having competitions canceled; it really is an exciting time.”

Many Lynn freshmen have been practicing harder to prepare for their collegiate competitions than they ever had before. These young athletes had to adjust to the rigorous and time-consuming practices and compete at the collegiate level. While their practice might be difficult, the freshman athletes understand the need to train hard to be serious contenders within their competitions.

“Everyone is just as competitive and hardworking as you, so the competition is twice as hard,” said John-Anthony Hernández, men’s cross country and
track athlete. “I think the overall goal for everyone is to compete and come out on top, and knowing there [are] different kinds of competition out there makes me want to train the absolute hardest I can.”

Along with working hard, Lynn’s freshman athletes have fun competing in college for the first time. The athletes enjoy being able to continue to compete in a sport they love and spend time with their teammates. The freshman athletes love to encourage their teammates throughout their competitive events and often make incredible memories with each other.

“I really enjoy the fact that I am competing with a team and not only as an individual,” said Lily Koch, women’s cross country and track athlete. “It is really fun to hang out with some of my teammates after a race as we cheer on our other teammates that are racing.”
